The original purpose of the Village Club and Lecture Hall as set out in the Trust Deed, was “to afford to inhabitants, and more especially the working and middle classes of Wimbledon and its vicinity, opportunities of intellectual and moral and rational and social enjoyment, through the medium of a reading room and library, lectures classes”.
Today this sounds patronising, but if it were not for the founders’ sense of duty to the community the Trust would not exist.
